SIALKOT: Following the growing global trend of mechanised footballs, the local manufacturers have started production of such balls by establishing new units.
Former chairman Pakistan Sports Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association Prof Safdar Sandal while talking to the newsmen on Wednesday said 10 units have started manufacturing mechanised footballs in Sialkot, which is globally known for producing the world quality hand-stitched soccer balls.
A leading football exporter Iqbal Sandal said that several Chinese companies had shown keen interest in importing mechanised footballs, as it has a huge market.
The local manufactures have created a Sport Industry Development Trust (SIDT) with one hundred units pooling Rs100,000 each to raise the seed money of Rs10 million. The activity being coordinated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido), aims at upgrading the industry.
In order to cope with the threats of machined soccer balls Smeda has finalised arrangements for setting up a Sports Industry Development Centre for the modernisation of sports goods sector, especially the soccer ball manufacturing units enabling them to cope with the new challenges of the global market.
