Sunday, July 18, 2010
KARACHI: Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) has not been restored on the networks of all cellular operators’ connections during the last two months due to delay in the process of programming solution to block restricted sites, industry sources said.

Sources said cellular operators network support partner and manufacturer of Blackberry, Research in Motion (RIM), has been engaged to program an internet solution for Pakistan’s customers to block restricted websites ordered by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

They said that blocking of specific websites is different application for RIM, which has been designed as technically viable for all operators of the country.

The BIS services went offline on May 19 by all operators on the verdict of Lahore High Court (LHC) to ban Facebook, Youtube and other links.

PTA has ordered to block all restricted websites containing blasphemous content against Islam. It blocked nearly 1,400 URL, links and pages temporarily and permanently both.

In pursuant of PTA directives, all cellular operators approached RIM to block Facebook and others’ websites, which was done following brief negotiation. The Blackberry Executive Services (BES) was also restored after one day, allowing subscribers to use email and messenger service on their handset connection.

Later, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication directed PTA to block 17 websites in a prescribed manner and ordering vigilant monitoring of seven other websites added that if any particular link containing offensive content is spotted, those links must be blocked immediately without disturbing the main websites.

The blocked websites include www.islam-exposed.org, www.jihadwatch.org, www.skepticsannotatedbible.com, ww.middle-east-info.org, www.faithfreedom.org, www.thereligionofpeace.com, www.abrahamic-faith.com, www.muhammadlied.com, www.prophetofdoom.net, www.worldthreats.com, www.voiceofbelievers.com and www.walidshoebat.com.

However, blackberry users in great number have shifted to the local internet services through their web service options in order to connect themselves with internet.

Cellular operators had made out all-out efforts to block all restricted sites on their GPRS services despite the number of objectionable websites were on the rise.

All websites slapped temporary banned such as Facebook and Youtube are accessible on Blackberry after setting of specific applications. Besides, sites’ browsing can easily be done on it.
